Ugandan girl, 19, makes deworming tablet: Innovation. The medicine, made of dried pawpaw seeds, sugar and cassava flour or banana flour.

“My dream is to become a veterinary doctor but I am also an emerging innovator,” says Christine Nalukwago, the girl behind the research which might lead to the discovery of locally-made de-worming tablets.
Nalukwago, 19, currently a Senior Six student at Kitante Hill School, says she hatched the idea of coming up with a solution to parasitic worms in children while staying with her grandmother.

“My grandmother used to give us dried pawpaw seeds to chew when we were still young but we didn’t know the use. But one day, she told us that they expel worms from our bodies,” she says.

Nalukwago says she became inquisitive after her grandma’s revelation and when she joined secondary school where she has access to laboratories, she chose to carry her research forward.

“At first, the results were not good but I kept on trying,” says Nalukwago, who offers Physics, Chemistry, Agriculture and sub-Math as a subject combination.

How it is done: Nalukwago says some of the substances she mixes to develop the ‘drug’ includes; dried pawpaw seeds, sugar and cassava flour or banana flour.
“I mix them in equal quantity and leave them in a clean open place to concentrate. Sometimes the whole process takes a week when there is enough sunshine or two weeks when there is little sunshine,” Nalukwago explains.
She says after final tests in the laboratory, she tried the drug on a worm and it died instantly. (read more via Daily Monitor)

Yep, more white people making, modelling and selling gear emblazoned with cheap re-prints of sugar skulls.

I’m sick of seeing this crap. This is a sacred and special holiday, not a money-making scheme. On the heels of Disney’s disastrous attempt to trademark Day of the Dead, this is especially frustrating.

I’ve written a formal letter of complaint to the site, and await a response. If you could do the same - to let them know multiple people are displeased with this blatant appropriation - I’d appreciate it.

I’ve never made a post like this before. But I’ve seen the tumblr community do amazing things, and I’m hoping you can help.

My friend, Georgina, had a 30-year-old sister named Penelope who was killed on May 9th as a result of domestic violence. Penelope had three beautiful girls, all under the age of 8, who are now left without a mother and with a father on the run.

The plan is for the girls to be placed in the custody of their grandparents, but the family is in desperate need of funds to make this happen. Friends are coordinating a fundraiser to cover the funeral expenses and moving/ongoing transportation costs. The goal is $20,000, and if anything is raised beyond that, it will go toward the substantial expense of rearing three young girls.

Any amount you are able to contribute would be a big help to these little girls and this woman’s stunned, grieving family.

Just one week after an Air Force officer working in the sexual assault prevention office was arrested and charged with sexual battery, the Army has learned that another U.S. service member is being investigated for ”abusive sexual contact” and other alleged misconduct. The U.S. Army Sergeant First Class who had been assigned as a coordinator of a sexual assault prevention program at Fort Hood, Texas, has been suspended from all duties.

A defense official says that this Sergeant 1st Class is being investigated for forcing at least one subordinate soldier into prostitution, and for sexually assaulting 2 other soldiers. Stationed at the Army’s 3rd Corps headquarters in Fort Hood, the sergeant also worked as an equal opportunity adviser. The allegations surfaced while the soldier worked with one of the Corps’ subordinate battalions.

The soldier has not been charged and the Army will not release his identity. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has ordered a full investigation. Special agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command, are conducting the investigation.

This doesn’t surprise me one tiny little bit, but it does disgust me.

When women vets reported that they couldn’t trust their command what did people think that meant? Imagine trying to report an assault or harassment in this climate.

Doctors and patients must use the diagnostic test that Myriad has developed, and others are restricted from research in that area. The patents are being challenged by organizations of physicians and researchers, geneticists, patients and others who say that the snippets of DNA are “products of nature” and may not be patented, even though the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued such patents for decades. The challengers were represented by Christopher A. Hansen of the American Civil Liberties Union. He told the court that Myriad did not deserve a patent because it did not invent anything. “The genes themselves . . . where they start and stop, what they do, what they are made of, and what happens when they go wrong are all decisions that were made by nature, not by Myriad,” Hansen said. “Now, Myriad deserves credit for having unlocked these secrets. Myriad does not deserve a patent for it.” The justices did not so much disagree with Hansen as they did worry about the consequences of not rewarding companies that invest so much money in genetic discoveries.”

So I would like you to really really consider that, in light of the fact that the SCOTUS just said that a farmer planting beans that has patented genes is patent infringement. The combination of these two things means that if we get to the point where human genetic modification, even a benign health improving one, can be passed down from parent to child, it could be considered patent infringement.

How fucking scary is that.
