NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — The United States holds a disproportionate amount of the world’s rich people.
It only takes $34,000 a year, after taxes, to be among the richest 1% in the world. That’s for each person living under the same roof, including children. (So a family of four, for example, needs to make $136,000.)
Greedy sonsabitches!
That’s the richest 1% in the world. The richest 1% in the United States makes somewhere around $380,000 a year. Nevertheless, if you’re making approx. $34,000 per person, your earnings are good and you’re part of the globe’s richest people, something I think that we can all be thankful for. :)
Sure, if a loaf of bread in the US costs the same as a loaf of bread in Cuba …
This is why the 1% nonsense is such a load of reactionary shit and should be criticised rather than internalised. Lets forget the relative values of wealth, the relationship a person holds to property and the agency they can take towards enacting change. Just harp on about percent of wealth, pretend that only the super rich are capable of exploitation and completely destroy the capacity to create a thorough analysis of global patterns of exploitation because it’s all just the top 1% in any given situation that’s bad.
Bolding mine. ^^ THIS.
This is not to shirk any of the responsibility of living and working in a country that exploits the crap out of the rest of the world to do it’s thing, but the OP is a gross oversimplification of the facts.

It’s an economic reductionism and determinism that makes me sick. Here in Brazil we’ve got a ridiculous official class...

Preach it, Praxis. This is one of those cases where remembering that money =/= capital is an extremely good thing.
